Shuby This Is The Spot Private View

Shuby ‘This Is The Spot’

A week ago today, Thursday 19th January saw the private view of ‘This Is The Spot’, a solo show by female street artist ‘Shuby’ at Lawrence Alkin Gallery on New Compton Street.

The gallery was greeted with a full house of collectors for the first opening of 2017. Guests included Ben Eine who once shared a studio space with Shuby.

The Showcasing of 18 large silkscreen one-off canvases executed in a traditional pop art style, delighted the walls of this intimate upstairs/downstairs venue.

Inspired by movie posters, small ads and tart cards ‘This Is the Spot!’ explores the beginnings of the UK porn industry. Running until February 18th, it truly is a must see.IMG_7004-compressor

Emergence at Eye Like Gallery – A Solo Show by Gina Soden

Eye Like Gallery presents Emergence’ – the first solo show of the acclaimed artist, Gina Soden. Not only does Emergence put on display iconic pieces of the artists work alongside work being displayed for the first time – but a collaboration between Gina Soden and Eye Like has resulted in a newly commissioned piece ‘Krankenhaus’. This monumental work, in terms of impact and size (160cm x 160cm) will no doubt be the highlight of the show and propels the artist further into recognition.

Gina Soden has been the subject of must press interest recently having won the prestigious ‘Emerging Artist of the Year‘ award from National Open Art in 2013 and subsequently being short-listed for the same award in 2014. This young Reading-based photographic artist is also to appear on BBC One’s ‘Inside Out’ later this year.

Emergence shall give Gina a chance to explain how her photographic works of often derelict and decaying sites provide a new sense of life and beauty as well as providing a perfect description of her own development as an artist furthering her already developed style. Aside from Gina’s emergence towards international fame, Emergence seems the perfect exhibition title for a gallery that, only just opening in Beaconsfield earlier this year, has been going from strength to strength gaining recognition from collectors and artists alike as the collaboration with Gina Soden has proved.

We are really excited about this collaboration and look forward to hearing how gallery owner Sarojini Brindley and gallery manager Mollie Philpot get on. For the chance to see Gina Soden’s work at Eye Like Gallery, the exhibition is open from 5th – 26th September 2014 at their Beaconsfield space with a Private View on Thursday 4th September from 18:00 – 21:00.

Deutsche Bank Art Collection – Tour

We were lucky enough to be given a tour of Deutsche Bank London’s impressive collection last week and were joined by a small group of our VIP Art Club members. I can safely say that we were completely overwhelmed at the volume and scope of the art that adorns their walls. Deutsche Bank has been associated with collecting contemporary art since 1979 and have established a vast collection of artists you will have heard of, and some they’re sure you’ll hear about in the near future!

When we entered their London offices from London Wall we couldn’t help but see Keith Tyson’s huge 12 Harmonics series that hangs down the entire length of the lobby. Commissioned for the space, Tyson’s polyptych panels are impressive for reasons beyond their scale. Each of the 12 panels painted on aluminium show one of the 12 signs of the Zodiac that are either immediately obvious or entice the viewer to work out which star sign is connected to which panel. However Tyson doesn’t stop at the signs of the Zodiac, or the first twelve elements of the Period Table… or even cleverly including numerical clues from 1 to 12. If you were not impressed by the three ways Tyson includes three different ways of linking the polyptych, he finally links the series with groups of three for each of the seasons and then splits the polyptch panels in half to have 6 day and 6 night panels.

After managing to pull us away from Tyson’s incredible work we were shown up to the eighth floor where the meeting rooms are named after – and contain – a contemporary artist. Corridor upon corridor is lined with works by familiar artists with the names on the doors giving clues as to what might await you inside. We were winding our way around the labyrinth of the eighth floor when one by one we disappeared off into the meeting rooms to discover works by artists we all loved. As both a fan of architecture and art I must admit I loved the views from their offices onto the nigh-time City skyline.

The remit of the collection is that it consists (with the odd exception) of works on paper. This is for two reasons, firstly it means that often the works are by well-known artists made more affordable by purchasing their traditionally less desirable works on paper and secondly that in an office block there is an abundance of space on the walls to hang the art!

The London collection of the Deutsche Bank is impressive on its own, but it is not an isolated example of the Deutsche Bank’s commitment to encourage artists and the wider art scene. The Deutsche Bank Towers in Frankfurt, Germany, is a similar enterprise on an even greater scale with floors organised into groups by geographic region and then by individual artist. Maybe a trip to Frankfurt might be on the horizon!

If you want to learn more about this incredible collection, the Deutsche Bank London has created an Art App for iPhones and iPads which can be downloaded, for free, here.

Brownhill Insurance Group Sponsors Chris Gollon Exhibition at Guildford Cathedral

Brownhill Insurance Group is delighted to sponsor established British artist Chris Gollon’s major solo exhibition at Guildford Cathedral, which opens in early 2014. The exhibition, Incarnation, Mary & Women from The Bible, is hosted in Gollon’s home county of Surrey and depicts female figures from the Old and New Testaments, looking anew and giving a modern representation of these women for a contemporary consciousness.

England’s second youngest cathedral, Guildford Cathedral, will not only provide a hugely impressive backdrop for Gollon’s large scale works, but provides a thematic grounding for this exhibition.

Incarnation, Mary & Women from the Bible will run from 28th January until 3rd March 2014 and will be available for public view on either side of the nave of Guildford Cathedral. The exhibition is accompanied by a full colour catalogue with texts by award-winning novelist Sara Maitland and art historian Tamsin Pickeral.

IAP Fine Art represents Chris Gollon and the exhibition is being sponsored by Brownhill Insurance Group in partnership with Markel – Specialist Insurers. The exhibition is also being sponsored by Catalyst Lifestyle.
