The Preview Day of the Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair is a day not to be missed, and this year proved no exception with an exceptional range of art and antiques on sale alongside a not-for-sale exhibition of work by the Art Nouveau artist and designer, Archibald Knox.
Walking around the fair, every category was represented, paintings and sculpture, furniture and textiles, jewellery and silver. The exhibitors had come from as far afield as South Africa, and included exhibitors from Italy, Portugal and the Czech Republic. The Olympia Exhibition Centre in London was transformed into an elegant space for the fair. Each exhibitor was naturally given their own space with some being transformed into elegant English country houses with beautiful 18th and 19th century furniture or stylish New York apartments complete with chrome accessories and Modernist paintings.
The not-for-sale Archibald Knox exhibition, Beauty and Modernity – a Designer Ahead of his Time, made a beautiful distraction from the mix of art and antiques on offer at the fair with a focused exhibition of art nouveau pieces, all by the designer Knox. Many of the pieces were his silver creations, ranging from clocks to candlesticks, made for the firm Liberty & Co. For a devotee of Art Nouveau, this 150th anniversary exhibition was a huge treat, bringing together many of his iconic designs from public and private collections, many of which we may never get the chance to see again.
Olympia International Art & Antiques Fair is open until 15th June, at the Olympia Exhibition Centre in London.
